The 2008 edition of the Coral Glades Jaguars swung into pre-season action and won their first two games in the Deerfield Beach First Pitch Tournament. The Jags opened with an 11-7 win over Western and followed it up with a 7-1 win over Piper.

The Jaguars got off to quick start as number two hitter John Parilla hit a deep home run to run field in the first inning. They added 3 more in the third as Anthony Parilla tripled in one and scored on a double steal, while newcomer Justin Lopez doubled for his first varsity hit and RBI.

After Western scored seven times in the fifth, the Jaguars answered with seven of their own in the bottom of the inning, all with two outs. David Stevens’ two-run single tied it up. The Jags then loaded the bases and an infield hit and error on a ball hit by Anthony Parilla cleared the bases.

Jaguar pitchers struckout 10 and four of their hurlers threw a total of six shutout innings: Phil Edwards (2 innings, 3 K’s, John Parilla (2 innings, 2 K’s), Mike Kline (1 inning, 1 K) and closer Pete Ramos who set a school record with 4 strikeouts in his 1 inning.

Three nights later, six Jaguar pitchers struckout 17 Bengals in a 7-1 win over Piper. Ryan McMahon started and pitched two innings, striking out 3. Mike Edie K’d two in 2/3 of an inning, Rob Reina got all four of his outs by strikeout in 1.1 inning, Edwards and John Parilla each struckout the side in their one inning and Ramos added two.

Ramos and Reina also struck the big blows. Ramos broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth with a long double in the fourth, followed by Reina’s single with runners on second and third in which both runners scored, the second aided by an error.

The Jaguars added three more an inning later, two scoring on RBI singles by Eric Blanco and Ramos.

As these are technically pre-season games, the individual statistics will count, but the team statistics (including wins and losses) will not.

The Jaguars open the regular season Tuesday at 7:00 at Westminster Academy.
